What is CBN Oil in Australia? AltMed explores.

Among existing cannabis-derived products is cannabinol (CBN) oil.  This guide will explore CBN oil in Australia.

What is CBN?

CBN is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid formed when THC degrades over time due to heat and light exposure.  This natural degradation process explains why older cannabis plants contain higher CBN content than younger ones.

CBN oil is extracted from cannabis plants with high CBN concentrations.  It can be diluted with a carrier oil, such as MCT oil, to create a product for therapeutic use. It usually contains CBN as the main active ingredient but may also include other cannabinoids and terpenes.

The Science Behind CBN

CBN interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors and enzymes that control various physiological functions.  The ECS has two primary receptors: CB1 and CB2. CBN has a mild affinity for these receptors, especially CB2, which is associated with the immune system and anti-inflammatory responses.

Unlike THC, CBN does not produce significant psychoactive effects.

Safety Considerations

While CBN is generally well-tolerated, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects and interactions with other medications.  Some users may experience drowsiness or fatigue when taking higher doses.  Like any supplement, starting with a low dose and gradually increasing it as needed is advised.  Products should be bought from reputable sources to ensure quality and safety.  If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications, you should consult with a doctor before using CBN.
