AltMed Podcast EP.08 – Cannabis Medicine and Wellness by Nick Morley

After 30 years of international experience in the fashion and personal care industry, Nicholas Morley used his extensive experience with people to develop a great passion for cannabis medicine and wellness.  Part of this shift saw Morley become one of Australia’s most well-known and active advocates for medicinal cannabis.

Through his dedicated spirit, Morley pioneered the modern ‘green market’ cannabis consultation scene.  He is featured on the Stan documentary, ‘Green Light,’ as well as other noteworthy documentaries including ‘High as Mike.’  In addition to these, Nick has featured on numerous podcasts. Today he is the owner of Greenlight Health, a cannabis medicine and wellness consultancy that helps educate about natural alternative therapies, giving advice and insight as to what may best suit each individuals’ needs.

Nick is an active member of the cannabis medicine and wellness community, always striving to push the industry to new levels whilst helping as many of those in need as possible along the way.

Key Points

1:02 – Nick grew up in Melbourne. He moved to Europe at the age of 21 and then eventually moved to Byron Bay.

2:25 – He explained that he worked in fashion industry as hair stylist and makeup artist for 30 years. Also, he had a clothing label for 7 years. His career in medicinal CBD started when he moved to Baron Bay about 7-8 years ago.

3:20 – Nick explained that he started working with CBD oil after meeting CBD Luke. Afterwards, they came up with a marketing plan and set up website by the name of cbdasutralia.org till TGA closed it down after a year.

5:31 – Nick explained that he does not believe that a whole lot has changed in terms of accessibility since he started career. He expounded that the black market still exists due to the high consumer demand and low production.

7:48 – Nick delved into detail regarding the presence of numerous farms locally producing CBD oil. He spelled out that some of the farms are apparently producing high quality products by extracting organic products under the guise of hemp. However, he was not sure of the quality due to lack of testing.

10:09 – Nick corrected the hosts that a lot of black market growers were actually working domestically.

11:52 – Nick clarified that a huge influx of people with mental health issue could be catered to with the use of CBD. He also asserted that medicinal cannabis is extremely beneficial for the side effects caused by cancer treatments, Dementia, Alzheimer, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease and Shingles etc.

13:36 – Nick asserted that despite his busy schedule, he could see that black market growers have lot of knowledge about CBD and medicinal cannabis. He explained that smoking CBD buds is the new trend.

14:49 – Nick believed that some black market products are really good

16:21 – Nick explained that people may not necessarily have a good experience with black market medicinal cannabis products. He also denied the notion that medicinal cannabis could work wonders for everyone.  Instead, he stated that a long term recovery process including diet, pattern of sleep and life style was necessary for patients.

18:40 – Nick stated explicitly that there was a lot of pressure on medicinal cannabis products and consultants to provide comfort to terminal patients. However, it may ease the pain of patients but not eradicate it completely. He asserted on holistic approach instead.

21:14 – Nick deciphered that CBD and THC could cure cancer in early stages. He was also adamant that due to other extremely dangerous therapies, it should be declared as the first line therapy to ease out the pain of patients.

22:33 – Nick agreed that clinical trials could be helpful in convincing doctors to prescribe medicinal cannabis so as to slow down the progress of disease.

24:51 – Nick unraveled that despite of popular belief, a lot of people would like to try medicinal cannabis owing to their fear of chemotherapy.

26:55 – In response to a question, Nick named some of the treatments which intrigued him including 5 MEO, extracted from dessert toad. He clarified that although it is normally smoked but the pharmaceutical version is also available.

30:27 – Although he had never done a retreat himself, Nick narrated an interesting story of his girlfriend who went for retreat with amazing results.

32:27 – Nick mentioned that he is not in the favour of drinking medicine in groups since it was a pretty intense and personal experience.

34:53 – Nick narrated that the complete cleansing through the psychedelic retreats was indeed a life changing experience.

36:37 – Nick agreed that people could face trouble after taking psychedelics.

38:01 – Nick was of the view that while the conventional psych medicines mask the issues, the psychedelics are usually confronting.

39:59 – Nick narrated that both he and Luck had to endure with increased media presence after their movie regarding the black market of medicinal cannabis in Australia.

42:01 – Nick said that he did not receive any backlash by the law enforcement agencies which was not surprising at all as they are mostly concerned with cocaine and ice.

43:10 – Nick clarified that since he was working purely as a consultant, so TGA did not bother him. However, he believed that TGA was definitely behind the frequent letters of warning to black market producers.

44:41 – Nick was of the view that most common questions are relevant to driving, healing capability of cannabis along with the concerns about medicinal cannabis being a drug.

46:36 – Nick was excited that TGA has allowed the chemists to dispense medicinal cannabis but he warned that they could only prescribe isolate products rather than full spectrum ones.

47:46 – Nick believed that companies would have to do trials to prove their efficacy. He also asserted that isolates are not as effective as full spectrum products and isolates could actually prove to be harmful to health.

50:31 – Nick explained that the only way for industrial progress is to change the governance system so as to make it more progressive.
