In week 12, we spoke with Tommy Huppert founder and CEO of Cannatrek about the growing and cultivation of medical cannabis in Australia. Cannatrek is a licensed cultivator and manufacturer within Australia with grand plans in the domestic market.
As at June 2021, cultivation and posession of up to 50 grams of cannabis is legal in ACT, and it is ‘decriminalized’ in South Australia and Northern Territory. In other states, minor possession or cultivation is still illegal with the penalty for posession of small quantities ranging from fines to criminal offences depending on past criminal history.
Accordingly, buyers over the legal age (18) would no longer need a referral, official approval or prescription to purchase. They would however, only be able to buy a maximum daily dose of 150mg of over-the-counter CBD. Further, over-the-counter CBD only encompasses low-dose oral, oral mucosal and sublingual formulations only. Hence, vaping and topical cream products can only be accessed commercially through a prescription from a doctor.
In this podcast we explore about the cultivation of medicinal CBD. Ranging from the regulatory compliance hurdles of cannabis in Australia, the difference between imported and locally grown products, the past and future of the industry as well as the medicinal versus recreational markets that exist across the globe.
