Alcohol is known for its ability to reduce inhibitions and promote a feeling of relaxation and CBD has a similar effect on the body. CBD oil and alcohol is known to reduce anxiety and calm the nerves. Combining these two could cause potential symptoms like sleepiness and sedation. Researchers also claim that mixing both could intensify each other’s effects and result in changes in mood and behaviour.
A small study was conducted by giving participants 200 mg of CBD alongside 1 gram of alcohol for every 2.2 pounds (1 kg) of body weight. It was noticed that combining alcohol and CBD caused impaired motor performance and alterations in the perception of time. Participants did not experience any such effect on consuming just CBD. However, this study is outdated as it consumed a lot more CBD than normal. There are not enough studies to prove the health effects of taking CBD and alcohol.
Consuming excess alcohol can cause damage to cells and cause inflammation and chronic diseases like liver, pancreatic and some types of cancer. On the other hand, CBD may protect against cell damage caused by alcohol consumption. A study conducted on mice showed that CBD can cause liver toxicity, as some mice in the study were given high doses of cannabis extract.
Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is a measure of the amount of alcohol in your blood. The higher the BAC the greater is your loss of motor control. While the research is limited. A small study showed that participants who took 200 mg of CBD with alcohol had lower blood alcohol levels than those who consumed alcohol with a placebo. Again this study is outdated as it was conducted a long time ago and the doses of CBD used was very high.
Other researches show that CBD could help treat alcohol use disorder. A study conducted on animals showed that CBD helped reduce many symptoms of addiction and withdrawal. It claims to reduce alcohol intake, prevent relapse and decrease motivation to consume alcohol.
This research is still very limited and needs more human studies. Higher quality of studies is needed to determine whether CBD can help with alcohol addiction in humans.
